Great Book on how to get the most out of your players

Dr. Jensen has worked with team building both in the world of sports and the world of business. He was the sports psychologist that worked with the gold medal Canadian Women's hockey team in Vancouver this past winter, as well as numerous other athletes in a wide variety of sports. I had a chance to have a conversation with him recently about OSV Hockey's efforts to spread the word about positive coaching and he was excited to have his book associated with that effort. Our Mission

OSV Hockey is an ambition to champion the best sides of the game of hockey. I'm promoting this idea, first with this blog, which is a guide for players and coaches on how to improve their approach to the game and second with our hockey apparel clothing line OSVHOCKEY.COM. Our apparel hopes to spread the message and visibility of the blog.

The One Simple Vision slogan comes from the idea that everyone that participates in the game can have a role in expanding the passion and positives the game brings to so many.

As a coach in the sport, your biggest challenge is to figure out what to teach and how to teach it an a way that empowers your athletes to make a total commitment to the team. This is a tall task, but can be accomplished if you explain what your plans are and your players believe your core value is to help them all improve. This message cannot be faked, but it really is that simple. The biggest hurdle is that the sport of hockey has become more and more a business and the pressures to win become a larger priority. With this overhang, it's easy to understand how this mentality can get pushed to the background. I'm hoping, you can use this blog as a constant reminder of what your true mission really is. Personally, as I evolved as a coach, my mantra became "it's all about the players". That mentality grounded me to always consider how my players needed to be treated to allow me to demand their best. The coach related posts will be highlights of the various different routes successful coaches have taken to maximize player development. It will also provide a road map for what to teach, when to teach it and how to make sure your players are improving and their love of the game constantly growing.

For players, you too have great opportunities if you approach the game with enthusiasm, be willing to make sacrifices and make all around you better. If you're not willing to do this, you're most likely involved in the wrong pursuit. If you do have that drive, you will also need to become a student of the game and increase the awareness of your particular training needs. All the posts from October 2010 on, will alternate from ideas on improving players to posts that are more slanted towards coaches. I would recommend reading both as there will should be something to learn from either perspective. There's an old saying out there "practice makes perfect." That saying has been updated to " perfect practice makes perfect." Zeroing in on better ways to practice is what this blog is all about.
